Lodge of Instruction
Purpose and Role
The Lodge of Instruction exists to help Freemasons improve their understanding and delivery of Masonic ritual. It is designed for all members, but is especially valuable to newer or recently raised Master Masons who are beginning their progression through the offices of a lodge.
The sessions provide structured guidance on the words, actions, and meanings within the ceremonies, giving members the confidence to take part in lodge work. It is a supportive environment where mistakes are part of the learning process, and progress is encouraged.
Training and Practice
At the Lodge of Instruction, members have the opportunity to rehearse ritual, ask questions, and receive feedback from more experienced brethren. It also serves as a place to prepare for specific roles and to gain familiarity with different parts of the ceremonies.
Even the social aspects of lodge life are covered—after the instructional work, there is a buffet-style festive board where brethren can practise the art of giving and responding to toasts.
Accessibility
Membership costs just £5 per year, keeping it affordable and open to all who wish to attend. The dress code is casual, making it easy for members to come along without the formality of a full lodge meeting.
Value to Members
Over the years, the Lodge of Instruction has proved invaluable in developing the confidence, skill, and knowledge of Masons at every stage of their journey. Whether preparing for a floor office, fine-tuning ritual delivery, or simply gaining a better understanding of the Craft, it offers a welcoming and practical way to grow in the order.
